Research-and-production association of power mechanical engineering (NPO ENERGOMASH) named after academician Valentin Petrovich Glushko, founded by him in May, 1929, today is the world leader in the field of creation of powerful liquid propellant rocket engines (LPRE).
NPO ENERGOMASH engines which have proved as highly effective and reliable ones are used practically on all domestic space launch-vehicles. From launch of the first satellite of the Earth and flight of first cosmonaut Y.A.Gagarin they work today on all modifications of "Soyuz" LV, on "Proton", "Zenit", "Dnepr", "Tsiklon", "Cosmos" LV, were used on "Energia" LV, and also operated in US “Atlas III” and «Atlas V» LV. NPO ENERGOMASH engines are installed also on some domestic military intercontinental ballistic missiles. .
These achievements became possible because design and research activity of NPO ENERGOMASH collective were always inseparable. In it there is V.P.Glushko's huge merit which, being the full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, itself actively conducted scientific work, involving scientific research institutes as Academies of Sciences, and various industries for the decision of huge volume of scientific problems. The headed V.P.Glushko Scientific council at presidium Academy of Science of the USSR on «Liquid rocket propellant» became the concentrator of a scientific idea and the organizer of the decision of problems of creation of the best in world LPRE.
Under direction of V.P.Glushko an outstanding scientific work - 40 volume reference book «Thermodynamic properties of individual substances», which is the reference book of engineers and scientists not only in Russia, but also in other countries, has been created.
Scientific activity of NPO ENERGOMASH is reflected in numerous publications of its employees, among which tens doctors and candidates of sciences. Advanced achievements are published in the annual scientific and technical collection "Works of NPO ENERGOMASH" in the field of development and research of LPRE and continuous chemical lasers on which NPO ENERGOMASH also takes in the lead positions in Russia.
Problems of thermodynamics, gasdynamics of liquids and gas, heat exchange and a boundary layer, stability of working processes in powerplants, materiology and durability, measurements and optics, designing of units and systems are wide spectrum of scientific directions which is reflected in "Works of NPO ENERGOMASH".
Two-volume work «Bases of kinetics, gasdynamics and optics of nonequilibrium environments», created by NPO ENERGOMASH employees, comprises fundamental data for developers and researchers of laser systems.
Incorporating Scientific and technical council, an academic council on dissertations, postgraduate study, NPO ENERGOMASH supports close relations with high schools and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Ìany scientific employees of the enterprise teach at leading technical universities of Russia, such as Moscow Aviation Institute (Technical University), Moscow State Technical University named after N.E.Bauman and others.
Progeny and followers of V.P.Glushko also as well as he, actively participated and participate in activity of Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and then Academy of Sciences of Russia, being its members.
Scientific relations are developing actively on a line of the international cooperation. Experts of NPO ENERGOMASH take part in the international scientific congresses and symposiums, conduct joint research works.
NPO ENERGOMASH has good prospects, develops following generation of LPRE into which reusable and three-propellant engines will enter, and also the engines using natural gas.
It will allow to provide the further development of the Russian space programs and to keep in the lead positions in world rocket engine development.
