NPO ENERGOMASH named after academician Valentin Petrovich Glushko, known earlier as GDL-OKB (Gasdynamic laboratory - Experimental Design Bureau) - the leading Russian enterprise on development of powerful liquid propellant rocket engines (LPRE). The liquid propellant rocket engines developed in NPO ENERGOMASH reliably put into orbit practically all domestic space objects, since the first artificial satellite of the Earth, the first spacecraft with the man onboard, up to "Mir" orbital station and "Energia" super-power rocket with "Buran" space plane. Accumulated by NPO ENERGOMASH huge experience of creation of liquid propellant rocket engines, possession of unique technologies has provided a favorable basis for cooperation with the various aerospace organizations and companies of all world.
NPO ENERGOMASH possesses the developed infrastructure including all necessary components of a work cycle of creation of LPRE:
-design bureau with powerful intellectual and personnel potential. The design office carries out author's supervision of manufacturing of engines and their engineering support at serial plants and at carrying out of flight tests of launch-vehicles. For these purposes the design bureau has a some branches (in Samara, Perm, St.Petersburg).
-plant equipped by the modern universal and specialized equipment; a total area - 56 hectares; a floor space - 205000 sq.m. Plant has the qualified industrial workers and specialists, providing development of technological processes, and also manufacturing and assembly of rocket engines.
-science-test centre possesses unique test facility (more than 80 stands) for all kinds of tests of LPRE as a whole and separate units, including two unique stand complexes for fire tests of engines with thrust up to 1000 tons.
Number of the personnel of the enterprise - nearby 5500
Total area - 92 hectares
The names and sites of our company have repeatedly changed, but main subjects - development of powerful liquid propellant rocket engines – were invariable ones. Since 1946 NPO ENERGOMASH develops powerful LPRE for military ballistic missiles and space launch-vehicles.
In 1954-57 RD-107 and RD-108 LPRE were developed for first domestic intercontinental ballistic missile R-7 on the basis of which the family of space "Vostok", "Voskhod", "Molnia", "Souyz" LV later has created. By means of these LV the first satellite of the Earth, the first manned space vehicle have been put into orbit, and all domestic program of manned flights is now carried out.
In the end of 50-70th years in NPO ENERGOMASH special line of LPRE was developed (RD-214, RD-216, RD-219, RD-251, RD-252) which were used in structure of R-12, R-14, R-16, R-36 ICBM, which were adopted by our army.
In the beginning of 60th years there has been begun development of the first powerful LPRE, which have received RD-253 designation, under the scheme with afterburning of oxidizer-rich preburner gas in the main combustion chamber. Operation of these engines has begun from1965 in structure of first stage of "Proton" LV.
Today the further works on modernizations of engines for "Souyz" and "Proton" LV are conducted with the purpose of increase of their efficiency.
In 70-80th years new perfect RD-264, RD-268 LPRE for new generation of R-36Ì, ÌR-UR-100 ICBM have been developed.
Development of new generation of LOX-kerosene LPRE has begun from the beginning of 70th years under the scheme with afterburning of oxidizer-rich gas - RD-120 engine for second stage of "Zenit" LV and the most powerful in the world RD-170/171 liquid engine intended for first stages of "Energia" and "Zenit" LV accordingly. RD-170 engine for "Energia" LV has been certificated for reusable operation. Operation of RD-171 engine in structure of "Zenit" LV under «Sea Launch» program now proceeds. Modernization of RD-171 with increased reliability (RD-171Ì) and RD-120 with thrust in the vacuum increased up to 93 ton (instead of 85 ton) has conducted. These engines are a basis for realization of the «Sea Launch» and «Land Launch»international programs.
With the beginning of 90th years NPO ENERGOMASH has begun active work for international market entry. In 1996 NPO ENERGOMASH has started development of RD-180 engine for modernized "Atlas" LV (USA). Since 2000 flights of US «Atlas 3» and «Atlas 5» are carried out by RD-180 engines of NPO ENERGOMASH development. These engines are serially produced in NPO ENERGOMASH and delivered in USA.
Since 1999 NPO ENERGOMASH has started development of RD-191 engine for the unified module of the first stage of new family of Russian "Angara" LV. In the further it is supposed to improve this engine for reusable operation in structure of a "Baikal" stage.
NPO ENERGOMASH on the basis of LOX-kerosene LPRE of new generation has developed the project of three-propellant RD-704 LPRE for advanced aerospace system MAKS and has conducted tests of experimental three-propellant LPRE which mixing head contains 19 injectors. For the first time an opportunity of combustion of three components in one fire space with achievement of high efficiency of burning had been confirmed with experimental researches that confirmed a basic opportunity of creation of new generation of LPRE.
In NPO ENERGOMASH works on research of the concept of the engine of a new type - with the closed contour of a drive of the turbine - are conducted. Realization of such scheme of LPRE can lead to reception of significant benefits in comparison with operated LPRE of the open or closed schemes. Design works on engines for spacecrafts with use of energy of the Sun are conducted also.
NPO ENERGOMASH is also leading enterprise in the field of development of continuous chemical lasers.
